About BT Wholesale
Wholesale runs BT's network worldwide, provides network services and solutions to more than 500 service provider customers, and processes over 300 million calls per day and 350 million Internet connections per month.

Business Background
In 2001, BT made the strategic decision to create BT Wholesale (BTW) as a separate, stand-alone business to provide enhanced voice, data and Internet services to its service provider customers and partners and keep up with the rapid pace of changes in the telecommunications industry. BTW needed the ability to support complex pricing contracts and customized partner pricing agreements that were not supported by Geneva, BT's standard billing platform. The design, evaluation and implementation of a new solution was led by personnel from BT Exact, the internal systems group for BT.

Business Benefits / ROI with PriceMaker
BT's analysts determined through careful evaluation that the conventional vendor packages did not address their requirements for contract-based billing. Instead, they selected and implemented RateIntegration’s pricing engine, trained their users and re-organized internal processes for their multi-billion dollar revenues streams within a very short four month time period.

BT personnel quantified the business benefits after three years in production with RateIntegration’s products as follows—

  • Reduced the "time to market" for new services by 50% and new custom agreements by 90%
  • Improved cash flow dramatically by reducing the "Days to Bill" by over 90%.
  • Generated an additional 0.5% per annum from more accurate contract billing
  • Reduced the unbilled events by 90%
  • Retired 30 legacy product-specific billing streams
  • Reduced annual systems maintenance costs by 15% despite a ten-fold increase in services offered
  • Delivered substantial capital expense savings by leveraging all existing systems to meet its requirements
  • Improved significantly the detection of errors in invoices from other operators, resulting in more accurate settlement to the benefit of all parties.
  • Eliminated virtually all manual processes around complex billing and settlement.
  • Enabled key personnel within the BT staff to focus on new product roll-outs and enhancing existing procedures as a result of the robust and trouble-free operations around the RateIntegration driven systems.

Further Information

The BT Wholesale implementation has been a production system since March 2002 handling over £4 billion per year in partner billing and settlement. It has been described in an article in the May 2003 issue of Telestrategies Billing World magazine. Also available is a technical whitepaper jointly authored by RateIntegration and BTExact.
